EOTO Mock Trial #2

Throughout the year of 1896 when the debate of Plessy V Ferguson was going on, fashion, food, were all very important. There was a different style that many attained by and had to wear. To begin first with the woman, they wore tight bodices with high collars and very narrow sleeves, just like how those in the previous decade had dressed. Although in about 1893 sleeves started to become a more leg- mutton shape. A leg- mutton shape is where a shirt is more tight at the lower arm and more puffered out on your upper arm. Having wide shoulders was very fashionable back then due to the fact that it allowed these shirts to lay nicely on easily when having wide shoulders. Also, more mascuilence styles as well as tailoring were starting to become very popular. Sometimes women would decide to wear a shirt with a collar or a tie . This occurred more when people were playing sports or exercising. Girls would typically do their hair very tightly on top of their head in very tight curls as well. If a woman wore a hat it usually was very tight or wide with a lot of trimming done to it.

Now the men would wear a three piece lounge suit that was very popular and frequently worn in the time period of the Plessy V Ferguson. This became more and more popular and then these suites became to have creases at the front of the trousers. Also, frock coats were very common and still worn during this time. Although, the people who mainly wore these frock coats were those who were more conservative men. The collars men would wear would be worn very high and the tips were pressed into their wings. This would make the collar look longer than it was and very turned down, this was called modern long with a knotted tie to style it. Men in this time period usually had their hair cut short with a part to the side typically. Big thick mustaches were usually common and a lot of older men still had longer beards. Although, some men were clean and always did shave.

The food during this time period was way different than it was now. In the time of Plessy V Ferguson many restaurants were starting to open. This was a big moment for the food industry to see all these different types of shops open up. There were also many different rules and laws referring to restaurants and different hotels that had restaurants. This was  because of all the different openings there were at this time. In 1896, there was a passage called the Raines Law. This law stated that hotels are only allowed to serve alcoholic beverages on Sundays. The Maryland Kitchen on thirty fourth street was known for Southern Cooking. There was also a restaurant called Gonfarone’s  which was an Italian restaurant in a village. These places were a success and many people loved to eat at them.
