EOTO Mock Trial #3

The March  of Washington was a huge protest march that took place in August, 1963. 250,000 people gathered in front of the Lincoln memorial located in Washing D.C.  This March was for jobs and freedom . The protest was also geared towards drawing attention to the challenges and inequalities that the African Americans have faced.  The March on Washington took place on the third anniversary of the Brown Vs. Board of Education case.  This was also under the occasion of Martin Luther King Jr’s I dreamed a dream speech.

The lead up to this march occurred in 1941, when A Philip Randolph who was the head of brotherhood of Sleeping car Porters, an elder statesman of the civil rights movement were the people who planned a march  on washington to protest african american soldiers exclusion from World War two as well as the new deal program.  There were many marches on Washington before the  biggest one in August 1963 to gain more freedom and jobs.

JFK ended up endorsing the March on Washington while partnering up with his general Robert F. Kennedy. They coordinated with many advisors to ensure many different security precautions and allow them to be taken seriously.  The civil rights leaders ended up being at the Lincoln memorial and wanted to end this protest that had taken place. Instead of the Capitol.  This was to make members of the congress not feel as if they were under siege.

There were so many important people who were at this March  to show pride in what they believed was right. There were so many performances and speakers from such different and diverse people.  Some of these important people were singers Marian Anderson, Odetta, and Joan Baez. Our  Little Rock civil rights veteran Daisy Lee Bates. Different actors such as Ossie Davis and Ruby Dee. Lastly , American Jewish Congress president Rabbi Joachim Prinz. These were only a handful of very important people who came to this huge protest to stand up for freedom. Due to these different people being there for what they believed in, this day became even more special and touched so many people. Each and every event that happened at this protest was the reason so many people were touched so hard by it.

More than three thousand members of the press were involved with covering the event.  There were also many diverse speakers who were at this march.  Martin Luther King Jr, stood up as a leader at this march and shared his “ I have a dream” speech. This speech was to inform the American public of the racial inequality and to stop discriminating against those based on their race. While all the citizens listened to this speech by Martin Luther King Jr. many people thought it was needed to make a change. After listening to the speech and knowing how famous it now is makes me realize how big of an event the March of Washing really was.  This speech impacted so many people at the March and still touches many people today too.
